The reality behind a bad SLIK status
Since 2018, the Financial Services Authority, OJK, has run the Financial Information Services System, SLIK, which replaced the old BI Checking. Banks, finance companies, pawn companies and other reporting institutions submit monthly data on every credit facility and its payment status.
Lenders read that history before approving a new loan. A collectibility rating of three, four or five on any facility, even a small paylater balance, usually triggers an automatic refusal at banks and most licensed platforms, regardless of your current salary.
Why licensed lenders refuse
Prudential rules require lenders to assess the ability and willingness to repay. A recent Macet status suggests both were missing, so internal credit policies treat it as a red line, especially for unsecured consumer loans and credit cards.
Illegal online lenders, by contrast, ignore SLIK, which is exactly why they are dangerous. They compensate with extreme fees, aggressive collection and abuse of the contacts on your phone. A loan that bypasses SLIK is almost always an illegal pinjol.
How SLIK works
Each facility is rated monthly from one to five: Lancar (current), Dalam Perhatian Khusus (special mention), Kurang Lancar (substandard), Diragukan (doubtful) and Macet (loss). The debtor information report, called iDeb, shows each facility with its recent monthly history.
Lenders do not see a single score from OJK; they read the facility-level data and apply their own policies. Some lenders accept a past problem that has been fully settled, while very few accept an active Macet without collateral.
How long a bad record stays
The payment history displayed in iDeb covers roughly the last twenty-four months. Once a debt is paid off, the reporting institution updates the facility as settled, but the earlier monthly ratings remain visible in the history until they roll out of that window.
A settlement for less than the full balance is usually recorded differently from full payment, and some lenders view it more critically. Always obtain a letter of settlement, surat keterangan lunas, and check that the next iDeb reflects it.
Checking your iDeb and correcting errors
Individuals can request their own iDeb free of charge online through the OJK iDebku service or in person at OJK offices. You need your identity card and, for online requests, a photo for verification; the result is sent electronically.
Wrong data must be corrected by the reporting institution, so file a complaint with the bank or company first and keep the receipt. If it does not respond, contact OJK through its consumer service, Kontak OJK 157, with copies of your evidence.
Feasible alternatives in Indonesia
The first priority is the debt behind the bad status. Negotiating restructuring, rescheduling or full settlement with the lender stops penalties and, once reported, improves how future lenders read your SLIK history.
For urgent needs, several legal sources do not rely mainly on a clean SLIK or use other safeguards. The table compares them qualitatively, since terms change and differ between branches, cooperatives and regions; it is not an offer.
Options compared
| Option | Provider | Typical conditions | Pros and cons |
|---|---|---|---|
| Restructuring or settlement | Original bank, finance company or platform | Proof of hardship, new schedule | Improves status over time; may add cost |
| Gold or goods pawn | Pegadaian and licensed pawn companies | Gold, electronics or vehicle papers, ID card | Fast, collateral-based; item auctioned if unpaid |
| Savings and loan cooperative | Koperasi simpan pinjam or credit union | Membership, regular savings | Community-based; quality varies, check legality |
| Group microfinance | Ultra-micro programmes for small businesses | Productive activity, group meetings | Small amounts; only for income generation |
| Loan with guarantor | Bank or BPR | Guarantor with good SLIK | Better acceptance; guarantor bears risk |
| Family loan | Relatives or friends | Written agreement, transfer receipts | Flexible; relationship risk |
Getting help with debts
OJK handles consumer complaints and can facilitate communication with financial institutions, while disputes may go to the alternative dispute resolution body for the financial sector, LAPS SJK. Legal aid organisations also assist debtors facing abusive collection.
Borrowers with old micro and small business debts at state-owned banks should know that Government Regulation 47 of 2024 allowed certain debts to be written off. Ask the bank directly whether your facility qualifies rather than paying intermediaries who promise to clean SLIK.
Five solution families available in Indonesia
Settling or restructuring the problem loan comes first, but Indonesia has an unusually wide range of other solutions for people with a weak SLIK history. Many are built around collateral, group guarantees or religious solidarity rather than the bureau file.
Pawn loans. State-owned Pegadaian, in conventional and sharia (rahn) form, and private pawnshops licensed by OJK lend against gold, electronics or vehicle documents. Approval rests on the appraised item; repay within the term, or extend it, and the pledge returns to its owner.
Microfinance and ultra-micro programmes
The government UMi programme finances ultra-micro businesses not yet served by banks, distributed through Pegadaian, PNM and partner cooperatives. PNM Mekaar lends to women micro-entrepreneurs in groups with weekly meetings, while BPR, BPRS, BMT, savings cooperatives and credit unions serve members locally.
Arisan, crowdfunding and zakat
Arisan, the rotating savings circle, lets members collect a lump sum without interest, and donation platforms such as Kitabisa fund medical or emergency needs. Securities crowdfunding licensed by OJK finances businesses, not consumers; any lending platform must appear on the OJK list.
BAZNAS and licensed zakat agencies such as Dompet Dhuafa and Rumah Zakat distribute consumptive aid and productive zakat for small businesses, sometimes as an interest-free qardhul hasan. Churches, Caritas networks and social programmes of the Ministry of Social Affairs offer further support.
Starting a business to escape over-indebtedness
Low-income households can combine UMi or Mekaar financing with mentoring, and the Ministry of Social Affairs has promoted entrepreneurship for benefit recipients through its PENA programme. Kartu Prakerja offers training that can support a new activity, under the conditions of each enrolment wave.
A food stall, online shop or repair service can fund a restructuring plan, yet borrowing from illegal pinjol to fund it is a trap. Start small with grants, savings or productive zakat, keep simple books, and avoid taking on stock on credit.
Secured and community-based solutions
Pegadaian, the state-owned pawn company, lends against gold and other goods with valuation at the branch. Because the loan is secured, approval relies on the item, not on SLIK. Pay attention to the rental fee, the due date and the auction rules.
Savings and loan cooperatives and credit unions lend to members based on savings history and community knowledge. Choose one that is registered and holds regular member meetings, and be wary of so-called cooperatives that only exist online and promise instant loans.
Practical action plan
The following plan suits most people who discover a bad SLIK status when a loan is refused. It focuses on information and settlement first, then on legal sources of money, and keeps new debt within what income can carry.
- Request your iDeb through iDebku and list each facility and its rating.
- Contact each lender to ask about restructuring or settlement terms.
- Obtain a settlement letter for every debt you clear.
- Complain to the lender, then to OJK, about any incorrect data.
- For urgent cash, consider a pawn loan, cooperative or family loan before any new credit.
- Check every platform against the OJK list of licensed providers.
- Rebuild with a small facility repaid on time for at least a year.
Costs and legal caps
OJK limits the daily economic benefit, including interest and fees, that licensed P2P lenders may charge, and has lowered the ceiling for short-term consumer loans in stages, to 0.1 percent per day from 2026. Late charges and collection practices are also regulated.
Pawn loans carry a rental fee calculated over short periods, and cooperatives set rates in member meetings. Compare the total rupiah amount to be repaid, including administration fees, and avoid stacking several small loans that together exceed your income.
Red flags and scams
People with bad SLIK records are the main audience of illegal lenders and fake private lenders on WhatsApp and social media. These patterns signal fraud or abuse and should stop any application.
- Loans promised without a SLIK check in exchange for an upfront administration or insurance fee.
- Apps requesting access to all phone contacts, photos and location.
- Paid services offering to whitewash or delete your SLIK record.
- Platforms not on the OJK list of licensed lenders.
- Requests to hand over your ID card, family card or ATM card as security.
- Threats, shaming messages or calls to your relatives and employer.
Frequently asked questions
The answers below cover what borrowers with a bad SLIK status ask most often. They are general information; for your specific case, contact the lender, OJK consumer services or a legal aid organisation.
Can I get a bank loan with a Macet status?
An unsecured bank loan is very unlikely while a facility shows Macet. Chances improve after full settlement, with collateral such as a vehicle or property, with a guarantor who has a clean record, or after the bad months move out of the recent history.
Is checking SLIK OJK free?
Yes. Requests through iDebku or at OJK offices are free of charge. Websites or agents offering to check or clean your SLIK for a fee add nothing you cannot do yourself, and some are scams collecting your identity data.
Does paying off the debt clear my SLIK immediately?
Payment changes the facility status to settled after the lender's next report, but the previous ratings remain in the monthly history for about two years. Lenders often treat a settled facility much more favourably than an open one.
Can a private person legally lend me money?
Yes, loans between individuals are legal under the Civil Code when documented fairly, ideally with a written agreement and transfer receipts. Anyone offering loans to the public as a business, including via apps, must hold an OJK licence or proper cooperative registration.
