Why an RKI entry closes most doors
An entry in RKI, the debtor register run by Experian, tells lenders that a creditor has registered an unpaid debt in your name. Danish banks, consumer loan companies and many phone or rental providers check it, and most will not proceed while the entry exists.
Since the 2020 tightening of consumer credit rules, lenders must make a careful creditworthiness assessment and look up debtor registers. A lender that promises a loan despite RKI without any checks is therefore either breaking the rules or not a genuine lender at all.
RKI, Debitor Registret and how entries are made
Denmark has two private debtor registers: RKI, operated by Experian A/S, and Debitor Registret. A creditor may register only an undisputed debt after warning you in writing, and registration must be cancelled when the debt is paid in full.
The five-year rule
Under the data protection rules for credit information bureaus, information older than five years may not be passed on, unless it is still relevant, for example after a court judgment. In practice entries disappear when the debt is paid or after five years.
Seeing and challenging your registration
You have a right of access to the information held about you, free of charge, by requesting it from Experian or Debitor Registret. If the debt is disputed, paid or registered without notice, ask the creditor to delete it and complain to the Datatilsynet if needed.
Cost caps and consumer protection
Since 1 July 2020 consumer loans in Denmark may not exceed an annual percentage rate of 35 percent, and the total cost of credit may not exceed the amount borrowed. Quick-loan marketing is restricted, and loan advertising linked to gambling banned.
The Financial Supervisory Authority licenses consumer loan companies, while the Consumer Ombudsman enforces marketing rules. A loan agreement can be cancelled within fourteen days. Debt collection is regulated too, and collection fees are capped, so inflated charges should be questioned with the collector.
Alternatives that can actually work
Because ordinary consumer credit is closed while registered, the realistic options focus on removing the entry, reducing the debt burden or covering urgent expenses without a loan. The table sets out who to contact and what each route involves.
| Route | Who to contact | What it involves | Downside |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pay or settle the debt | Creditor or collection agency | Lump sum or instalment deal, then deletion | Instalments must be kept to avoid re-registration |
| Free debt advice | Municipal debt counselling, voluntary organisations | Budget, negotiation with creditors, help with applications | Waiting lists in some cities |
| One-off help from the kommune | Your municipality | Support for necessary single expenses in special cases | Strict conditions, assessed case by case |
| Guarantor or co-applicant | Bank where the other person is a customer | Second person with income and no registration | They bear full liability |
| Pawnbroker | Licensed pawnbrokers | Loan against jewellery or valuables | Item sold if not redeemed |
| Gældssanering | Bankruptcy court | Court-approved plan, usually over several years | Strict budget, discretionary approval |
| Donation fundraising | Online collection, checked with Indsamlingsnævnet | Money from friends and the public for a stated need | Uncertain amount, rules on public collections |
| Charity grant or legat | Mødrehjælpen, Frelsens Hær, private foundations | Non-repayable help for specific expenses | Limited budgets, application rounds |
| Start-up guidance | Jobcenter, regional Erhvervshus | Free advice on starting a small business | No funding for applicants in RKI |
Free debt counselling
Several municipalities, including Copenhagen, offer free debt guidance, and voluntary organisations run advice centres staffed by trained volunteers and lawyers. They help with budgets, contact creditors, check whether fees are lawful and prepare applications for gældssanering when debts cannot realistically be repaid.
Family loans and employer advances
A loan from family should be written down in a simple gældsbrev stating amount, interest and repayment dates. Some employers can pay an advance on salary. These options carry no RKI check, but unpaid family debts can still damage relationships.
Five concrete solution families for people in RKI
A Danish lender that sees an RKI entry will rarely go further, so the useful question becomes which channels ignore the register or look at the person instead. Five families stand out, alongside settling the debt, free gældsrådgivning and one-off help from the kommune.
Pawn loans (pantelån). Danish pawnbrokers need police authorisation under the pawnbroking act and lend a share of the resale value of gold, watches or electronics without consulting RKI. Repay principal and interest and the item comes back; if not, it is sold, usually at auction.
Microcredit and small cooperative loans
Denmark has no real personal microcredit sector, and proposals for microloans to entrepreneurs have mostly stayed on the drawing board. The nearest substitutes are a small secured loan at your own bank with a guarantor, or a salary advance agreed with an employer.
Crowdfunding and community lending
Collecting donations online for a concrete personal need is legal, but public fundraising falls under the Danish collection act, so check with Indsamlingsnævnet whether notification is required. Lending platforms authorised by Finanstilsynet under the EU crowdfunding regulation finance businesses, not consumers listed in RKI.
Charities, foundations and Christmas help
Mødrehjælpen advises families with children on money and debt, while Frelsens Hær and Kirkens Korshær provide food, clothing and seasonal julehjælp. Many private legater award small grants for rent arrears, dental bills or school costs; a grant is never reported to RKI.
A step-by-step plan
Trying one lender after another while registered only collects refusals. A structured approach starts with the facts about the registered debt and works toward deletion, so that ordinary credit at regulated prices becomes possible again when it is genuinely needed.
- Request your information from RKI and Debitor Registret to see which creditor registered you.
- Check the debt, fees and whether you received a written warning before registration.
- Contact a free debt counsellor to review your budget and options.
- Negotiate payment or settlement and keep written confirmation of deletion.
- For urgent necessities, ask the kommune about one-off help before borrowing.
- If debts are unmanageable, apply for gældssanering with professional help.
Rebuilding after deletion
Once deleted, an entry no longer appears to lenders, but your bank still knows your history. Keep accounts in order, pay bills through automatic transfers and start with a modest credit line, so that a stable record gradually restores trust.
Red flags in offers to people in RKI
Ads for lån trods RKI appear on social media and in forums. The Experian group has itself warned about fraudsters using its name on Facebook. Typical schemes demand an upfront payment or collect your MitID details to take out loans in your name.
- Fees, deposits or insurance demanded before the money is paid out.
- Requests for your MitID, NemID codes or bank login.
- Lenders without Danish authorisation or contact details.
- Promises to remove an RKI entry without paying the debt.
- Cash loans from individuals with weekly interest or threats.
When borrowing is the wrong move
If income does not cover current expenses, a new loan, even from family, rarely solves the problem. Debt advice, benefits and, if necessary, gældssanering address the underlying situation; a loan only makes sense when a clear source of repayment exists.
Can any bank lend to me while I am in RKI?
It is rare. Some banks may agree a loan with full security, such as a deposit or property, or with a guarantor, especially for existing customers. Unsecured consumer loans are practically impossible while the registration remains.
How quickly is RKI deleted after payment?
When the debt is paid in full, the creditor must request deletion, which is usually processed within a few days. Ask the creditor for confirmation and check your registration afterwards. Partial payment or an agreement does not always lead to deletion.
Does gældssanering remove me from RKI?
Debts covered by a debt relief order are reduced or written off, and creditors should then delete related registrations. The court decision itself is public and can affect future credit assessments, so rebuilding still takes time and careful budgeting.
Can starting a small business help me get out of RKI?
Possibly, if it brings real income. The regional Erhvervshus offers free start-up advice and some unemployment funds accept limited self-employment alongside benefits. Banks rarely finance anyone in RKI, so start with existing tools and keep VAT and tax payments current to avoid new public debt.
