What a betalningsanmärkning is
A payment remark is an entry held by Swedish credit reporting agencies, such as UC, showing that an unpaid claim has reached the Swedish Enforcement Authority (Kronofogden) or a court. Typical triggers are a granted order to pay, an approved enforcement application or a court judgment.
Ordinary reminders and collection letters from a debt collector do not create a remark by themselves. The remark appears once the creditor turns to Kronofogden and the claim is established, which is why answering early letters can still prevent a long-lasting entry.
Three years, paid or not
For private individuals a payment remark is normally kept for three years from the date it was registered. Paying the debt does not shorten that period, a frequent surprise, although lenders may view a paid remark more favourably than an outstanding debt in enforcement.
Remarks versus debts in enforcement
A remark is history; a debt registered with Kronofogden is a current problem. Lenders treat outstanding enforcement debts as a near-automatic rejection, while a single older remark for a paid claim may occasionally be accepted, especially if there is collateral or a co-applicant.
Ordering your own credit report
Anyone can request a free copy of their own credit information from each agency, and receives a copy whenever a company runs a check. Reading it closely shows which remarks a lender will see and helps catch registration errors that can be disputed.
Legitimate options before any private loan
Borrowers with remarks often face a market of costly lenders and brokers. Before comparing such offers, the cheaper public and contractual alternatives deserve attention, because they address the cause of the problem rather than adding another monthly payment to an already stretched budget.
Municipal budget and debt advice
Every Swedish municipality must offer free budget and debt advice (budget- och skuldrådgivning). Counsellors, as described by Norrköping and Hjo, help build a budget, contact creditors, suggest payment plans and prepare an application for debt restructuring. The service is confidential and does not affect credit records.
Talking to your bank and creditors
Banks such as Handelsbanken publish guidance urging customers who cannot pay to make contact early. Lenders can sometimes offer a payment pause, a longer term or a revised plan, which costs much less than taking a new high-cost loan to cover the instalment.
Skuldsanering through Kronofogden
When debts are too large to repay, an individual can apply to Kronofogden for skuldsanering. If approved, the person pays what the budget allows over a plan period, usually several years, after which the remaining covered debt is written off. Remarks are recorded meanwhile.
| Option | Who provides it | Cost | Effect of a remark |
|---|---|---|---|
| Budget and debt advice | Municipality | Free | No effect |
| Payment plan or pause | Existing bank or creditor | Usually low | Negotiable |
| Skuldsanering | Kronofogden | Free to apply | Typical situation |
| Secured refinancing | Bank or specialised lender | Moderate | Sometimes accepted |
| Unsecured online loan | Consumer credit company | Capped but high | Usually refused |
Interest caps and borrower rights
Since September 2018 Sweden has capped high-cost credit: interest may not exceed the reference rate plus 40 percentage points, and total interest and fees cannot exceed the amount borrowed. Lawmakers have since debated tighter rules, so current figures should be checked with Konsumentverket.
Consumer credit carries a fourteen-day withdrawal right, the right to repay early and a duty for the lender to assess creditworthiness. Lenders and brokers need authorisation from Finansinspektionen, and disputes can be taken to the National Board for Consumer Disputes free of charge.
Benefits and the protected amount
Försörjningsstöd, the municipal social assistance, covers essential living costs and is counted against all household income. It cannot be used as repayment capacity for a new loan, and when Kronofogden garnishes wages it must leave a protected amount (förbehållsbelopp) set each year.
Who these routes suit
Debt advice suits anyone with remarks or arrears. A payment plan suits those with a temporary dip in income. Skuldsanering suits people who cannot realistically repay within a reasonable time. Secured refinancing suits homeowners with equity and stable income.
Steps in a sensible order
Following a fixed sequence prevents the costly pattern of borrowing to pay instalments. The steps below mirror how Swedish municipal counsellors usually work through a household that has remarks, debts with Kronofogden and immediate bills.
- Order your credit report and log in to Kronofogden to see registered debts.
- Book free budget and debt advice with your municipality.
- Contact each creditor in writing to request a plan or pause.
- Apply for försörjningsstöd if essentials cannot be covered.
- Prepare a skuldsanering application with the counsellor if debts are unmanageable.
- Compare any loan offer only afterwards, using the effective annual rate.
Mistakes and warning signs
Advertisements promising quick loans despite remarks attract people who have been turned down elsewhere. Some are lawful but expensive; others are outright fraud. Anything that requests payment upfront, or claims not to check credit at all, should be checked with Finansinspektionen.
- Paying an arrangement, insurance or guarantee fee before the money arrives: the standard advance-fee scam aimed at Swedes with remarks.
- Logging in with BankID at a stranger's request, which can be used to take loans in your name.
- Using a new SMS loan to cover an older one instead of contacting the creditor.
- Accepting a private loan from an acquaintance without a written agreement.
- Ignoring letters from Kronofogden, which removes the chance to object or negotiate.
Can I get a loan with a betalningsanmärkning?
Some lenders accept applicants with an older remark when the loan is secured against a home, a car or a guarantor. Unsecured loans are rare and expensive. No authorised lender may skip the creditworthiness assessment, whatever an advertisement suggests.
Does paying the debt remove the remark?
No. The remark normally stays for three years even after payment. Paying still matters, however: the debt disappears from Kronofogden's register, enforcement stops and lenders usually distinguish between a paid historical remark and a debt that is still outstanding.
Is a loan broker worth using?
Authorised brokers compare offers from several lenders with one application, which limits the number of credit checks. They cannot override lending rules or remarks. Check that the broker is registered with Finansinspektionen and never pay a fee before a loan is granted.
Can family members lend money privately?
Yes. Lending between private individuals is legal, and a written promissory note (skuldebrev) stating amount, interest and dates protects both sides. If the borrower already has debts with Kronofogden, the lender should understand that enforcement may limit repayment capacity.
Where do I report a loan scam?
Call your bank immediately if money or codes were shared, then report the fraud to the police. Finansinspektionen publishes warnings about companies without permission, and Konsumentverket's Hallå konsument service helps with questions about credit marketing and consumer rights.
